Everyone learns differently, and at their own pace. I get that.
But there's a difference between learning at a slow pace because they
CHOOSE to, and just plain learning forever slow
because . . .
They don't know that they don't know!
YOU are about to KNOW!
It is virually impossible for you to work this workshop and not dramatically
improve in a very short amount of time! It all depends on YOU! If you DO IT!
If you put in the time, and do each section as instructed, you will see
noticeable improvement within DAYS! Not months - NOT YEARS!
This is the next step on your journey to becoming a real musician!
Transposing keys! - It's honestly not hard!
I'm going to show you a couple ways to do it. One will work for you!
But it's not hard! Most musicians KNOW the Chromatic Scale. It's really
KID STUFF! And you SHOULD know it! Those who do can actually do what I
show you below . . . in their head!
You don't NEED to know the scale. But in the long run, learning
it SOONER is better than learning it LATER! Those of you who are in the
"I don't need to know it" group are also in the "You don't know that you
don't know" group. But hey, it's totally your choice! I'll show you how
to transpose without knowing the Chromatic Scale, below!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is actually as simple as using one of those toy decoding
rings, or toys when you were a KID!
You remember those decoding games, right? You get a bunch of words
that make zero sense! Like . . .
jdhfh uhgf syuye nkos we k wkisksks ideudr !
And you "have the code!" Simple substitution. A=G B=W etc.
Transposing is even easier! There are only 7 letters! You do need
to know one thing first. The code to the code! Yeah, and it's called
The Chromatic Scale. All it is, is the 7 letters, plus some flats,
or sharpes. (The black keys on a piano!) It looks like this . . .
OK, let's transpose a song. You have a songbook with a song in the key of A.
The chords are A F#m Bm E. You recognize it as a I vi ii V. (1625). But either
you can't sing it in A, or don't play the chords well, and want it in C. So,
Write out the Chromatic scale, 2 octaves, starting with the 1st chord in the
song you want to transpose. A . . . The song has a sharp chord, F#m, so
write it out using sharps.
A A# BC C# D D# EF F# G G# A A# BC C# D D# EF F# G G# A
First chord is A. Count up from A to C. A, up 1 A#, up 2 B, up 3 C. So
change ALL of the chords up 3!
A became C. Go to the F#, up 3 is A. So your F#m becomes Am. The Bm, up 3
is Dm. The E, up 3 is G.
You can either memorize/learn the Chromatic Scale (Serious musicians &
players should do this!) or just write it out and keep it handy!.
So, A F#m Bm E bcomes C Am Dm G. IT'S REALLY THAT SIMPLE.
But there's another simple way to do it. Some people prefer this way . . .
Look at the chords in the song. The chords tell you it's in A. Or look
at the key signature in the music. If you see 3 sharpes, it's in A.
Yeah, this is easier for those who have some theory under their belt.
Now you know the key is A, so figure out what the chord numbers are in
the song. Write out an A major scale. A B C# D E F# G# A. And you will
quickly, and easily figure out that the A is 1, F#m is the 6. Bm is the 2.
E is the 5.
If you understand the simple Number System for chord names, this is a snap!
If you don't, there's a link below to a workshop that explains what chord
progressions like I IV V (145), and I vi ii V (1625) means!
You KNOW the key of C inside out and backwards. So what is a 1 6 2 5 in C?
C Am Dm G.
That's all there is to it. With a little practice, you'll be doing all of this
in your head in no time! (Maybe! Some people just can't do it in their
head - because they don't do it often enough to develop the skill.)
But there is one, much better way to do this! Much better if your goal
is really to become a skilled musician! And that way is to WORK the next
workshop, HARD! You will MASTER the keys of C, G & D. You'll know
20 top chord progressions, and transposing will become 2nd nature!
"NEW !"Master the keys of C, G & D ! - PLAY 1,000 SONGS!
If you're a "newish" player, you might be interested in THIS short workshop,
rather than the longer, 20 chord progression workshop! This one only covers
the TOP 6, most commonly used chord progressions in ALL songs! In 3 keys, G, C & D.
It focuses on helping you learn to play by ear!
NEW! How To Recognize Chord Patterns In Songs! - Learn To Play By Ear!
How to dynamically improve your song learning skills!
And there you have it!
It is virually impossible for you to work any of my workshops and not dramatically
improve in a pretty short amount of time! It all depends on YOU! If you DO IT!
If you put in the time, and do each section as instructed, you will see
noticeable improvement within DAYS! Not months - not years!
WORKING the workshop means doing ALL of the exercises! Don't skip any!
And . . . DO THEM IN ORDER! AND . . . do them OFTEN!
OK, sit back a minute and think this over. Was it worth the time? Did
you learn anything you think you can use? Will it be fun? And one more
thing . . .
DOES TRANSPOSING MAKE MORE SENSE NOW??
