It is virually impossible for you to work this workshop and not dramatically
improve in a very short amount of time! It all depends on YOU! If you DO IT!
If you put in the time, and do each section as instructed, you will see
noticeable improvement within DAYS! Not months - not years!
There are only 7 chords in a key. At least, only 7 chords in a key's Harmony
Chord Scale.
So, if you took just one key, and mastered it, could play the 7 chords, theoretically, you should be able to play ANY song ever written! Albeit, only in that one key!
There are songs that use chords outside of the key they're in. True enough! But the majority of all songs only contain chords in the key the song is in.
Also, the chords you occasionally find in a song that aren’t in the song’s key are only a “key away”! As in, if you knew a COUPLE keys, you’d also know many of the “other” chords in those songs.
And if you knew a FEW keys . . . you’d rarely even need more chords to cover every song ever written!
NOTE: I’m not including Jazz and Standards. But even most of those tunes can be played, and sound good, with less chords.
So, doesn’t it make sense to master a key or two from the beginning of your learning?
One more point, then On With The Show! Progressions! Look, there are only so many permutations of 7. So many combinations of the 7 chords.
OK, there are literally 1000s of permutations of 7. But musically speaking, there are only so many combos of 7 chords. Plus, MOST songs only use 3 or 4 chords!
SO . . . it also makes sense that if you learned a handful of chord progressions, (about 20!) all in one key, you could literally play 1000s of songs! And if you would learn just the main 4 chords of just TWO MORE KEYS, you could play those 1000s of songs in THREE KEYS!
And THAT is what this workshop is all about! We’re going to play the top most common chord progressions ever used in songs – EVER! In ONE key!
THEN, in Part 1 and Part 2 we’ll add a small handful of chords to the list,
and convert ALL of the progressions into different keys! C and G

But first, just a teeny bit of theory! I promise!
Just the absolute basics for this workshop. Every key has 7 chords in its
harmony chord scale. The notes of these 7 chords are ALL in the major scale
of the key.
The chord pattern is always the same.
Major minor minor Major Major minor Diminished
The key of D Major Scale is: D E F# G A B C# D
In the key of D we have . . . D Em F#m G A Bm C#dim
Each chord is numbered logically. D being 1, Em 2 etc. So a 1 4 5 would
be the 1st 4th and 5th chord of the chord scale. D G A. Generally, we us
Roman Numerals to show chord numbers. I IV V. Minors use lower case. Em = ii
These are all 3-note chords, called triads. We also have what's commonly
called the Jazz Harmony Scale. It's made up of 4 notes from the scale.
Adding the 7th note of the scale to the triad. All chords in the Jazz scale
are a form of 7th chords.
In D they are . . .
Dmaj7 Em7 F#m7 Gmaj7 A7 Bm7 C#m7b5
Generally, all the notes in the melody of a song are in the major scale
of the key the song is in. The melody will fall over chords made from
the same notes. So if you know just the 7 chords of a key, you can play
to just about any song, any melody in that key.
This workshop focuses on the key of D. After you work this workshop . . .
YOU WILL KNOW THE 7 CHORDS!
AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LITERALLY PLAY 1000S OF SONGS!
All of the exercises below have 2 audio tracks. One uses triads, the other, 7ths.
If you don't know the chords of the Jazz scale yet, you have two options.
1). Skip those tracks for now, and only work on the triad tracks.
2). Learn the chords now! And work on the tracks as you learn them!
Guess which one I suggest!

We’ll work in the key of D.
Working all of the following exercises covers just about any chord combination
you'll come across playing most songs. The exception being, songs that use chords
outside of the key the song is in. But they are few compared to the ones that don't!
DRILLS: THE TRACKS START SLOW, INCREASE IN TEMPO EACH ITERATION.
Just go as far as you can in each one. You'll get farther each time
you work this workshop. You should work it for 60 to 90 days!

About Part 1 & Part 2
Parts 1 & 2 are identical to Part 3, except for the KEYS!
Part 1 is the key of C. Part 2 is the key of G.
You should work each workshop until you can fluidly play ALL of
the practice tracks! Then move on to the next. HOWEVER . . .
It's supposed to be work, sure. But it's also supposed to be FUN!
If you want, you can work a bit each practice session on more than one
workshop! So you could work your way through some in G, then switch over
to C, then D. Or work on a chord workshop for a while, then jump over to
a scale workshop. Like the Pentatonic Master Class Workshop!
